Tip: Fill all fields accurately for correct calculation.

The Negative Marking Calculator is a quick and reliable tool designed for students preparing for competitive exams such as JEE, NEET, UPSC, SSC, or other tests that include negative marking.
It helps you calculate your total score accurately by considering both correct and incorrect answers, as well as the negative marking ratio defined by the exam pattern.

With this calculator, you can easily estimate your expected marks, identify how much you lose due to incorrect answers, and strategise better for future exams to maximise your score.

How to Use the Tool

  1. Enter Total Questions – The total number of questions in your test or exam.
  2. Enter Correct Answers – Number of questions you answered correctly.
  3. Enter Wrong Answers – Number of questions you answered incorrectly.
  4. Enter Marks per Correct Answer – Usually 1, 2, or 4 depending on the exam pattern.
  5. Select Negative Marking Ratio – Choose the correct penalty ratio (e.g., 1/4 means 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer).
  6. Click “Calculate” to get your Total Score instantly.

Formula Used

The calculator uses the following standard formula for exams with negative marking:

Total Score = (Correct Answers × Marks per Correct Answer) − (Wrong Answers × (Marks per Correct Answer ÷ Negative Ratio))

where:

  • Correct Answers = Number of correctly answered questions
  • Wrong Answers = Number of incorrectly answered questions
  • Marks per Correct Answer = Marks awarded for each correct answer
  • Negative Ratio = Value in denominator (for 1/4, ratio = 4; for 1/3, ratio = 3, etc.)

If there is no negative marking, the formula simplifies to:

Total Score = Correct Answers × Marks per Correct Answer

Example Calculation

Let’s say you appeared for a 100-question exam where:

  • Marks per question = 4
  • Negative marking = 1/4
  • Correct answers = 70
  • Wrong answers = 30

Step 1: Calculate negative marks per wrong answer
= 4 ÷ 4 = 1 mark deduction for each wrong answer

Step 2: Apply the formula
Total Score = (70 × 4) − (30 × 1)
= 280 − 30 = 250 marks

Final Score = 250 / 400 = 62.5%
