The MS Rectangular Pipe Weight Calculator helps engineers, fabricators, and construction professionals quickly find the weight of Mild Steel (MS) rectangular hollow sections (RHS) based on their outer width, height, wall thickness, and length.
This online calculator eliminates the need for manual math or reference tables, providing accurate and instant weight results using the standard density of Mild Steel (7850 kg/m³).
Whether you are estimating material requirements, preparing a quotation, or planning transport loads, this calculator ensures precise results in seconds.
How to Use the Calculator
- Enter the Outer Width (W) of the pipe in millimetres (mm).
- Enter the Outer Height (H) of the pipe in millimetres (mm).
- Enter the Wall Thickness (t) in millimetres (mm).
- Enter the Length (L) of the pipe in meters (m).
- Click “Calculate” to get the total weight in kilograms (kg) along with the cross-sectional area, volume, and internal dimensions.
Formula Used
The calculator is based on the rectangular hollow section (RHS) volume and the Mild Steel density formula:
Weight (kg) = [(W × H) − (W − 2t) × (H − 2t)] × L × Density ÷ 1,000,000
where:
- W = Outer Width (mm)
- H = Outer Height (mm)
- t = Wall Thickness (mm)
- L = Length (m)
- Density = 7850 kg/m³ (for Mild Steel)
Example Calculation
Let’s say:
- Outer Width (W) = 100 mm
- Outer Height (H) = 50 mm
- Wall Thickness (t) = 5 mm
- Length (L) = 6 m
Step 1: Calculate Inner Dimensions
- Inner Width = 100 − (2 × 5) = 90 mm
- Inner Height = 50 − (2 × 5) = 40 mm
Step 2: Cross-Sectional Area
= (100 × 50) − (90 × 40) = 5000 − 3600 = 1400 mm²
= 1400 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.0014 m²
Step 3: Volume
= 0.0014 × 6 = 0.0084 m³
Step 4: Weight
= 0.0084 × 7850 = 65.94 kg
Result: The MS Rectangular Pipe weighs approximately 65.94 kg.
